wonderful place

It was our first time in Colorado. I was really impressed with the city, particularly the gastronomy side of it. The fact that we could also get from one mountain to the other in no time was also a plus. We had the snowest week of the season, and the experience was trully satisfying. The snowboarding experience was great for me at Snowmass, and my wife, a beginner, also had a great time at Buttermilk. It is definetely a place for the whole family. It is certain that we will return to the city--and next time we'll bring the kids along!

something for everyone at Aspen/Snowmass

We stayed in Aspen at the Fasching Haus condo, which is 5 minute walk from the Gondola, or the bus stop, and even closer to the Shadow Mountain lift. We had six guys on this trip, and our Ski.com agent found us this condo with six twin beds in 2 bedrooms plus a den, so no one had to sleep on a couch or a rollaway. The condo was also close to bus stop, which eliminated the need for a car rental. It took a half hour each way to Snowmass and Highlands was even closer.

We're all advanced intermediate to expert skiers, and Aspen/Ajax mountain is a bit steeper than Vail, Breck or Snowmass, so we had no problem. Intermediate skiers would still enjoy Ajax, but they might want to stay up top, riding the Ajax express and then downloading on the gondola to avoid the always skied-off moderately steep Little Nell run near the base. Snowmass is a great mountain with a few adrenalin stimulating steeps, but mostly with lots of blue cruisers for everyone, like what you find at Breck, Keystone and Vail. Snowmass and Aspen Highlands have some steeps that are steeper than what those resorts have, so I love the Aspen area because of this wide variety of terrain. Also, it gets less crowded on the weekends than does Vail or the Summit County resorts, due to its longer distance from Denver. The snow base was only about 30 inches, but the conditions were far better than I was expecting. Some favorite runs on Ajax are Back of Bell, Face of Bell, etc, Walsh's, and Blondies. At Highlands, I thought Soddbusters had better snow than did Kesslers. We did not hike the bowl this year - the hike is tough and I wasn't sure the snow cover would be good enough to make it worth the effort. At Snowmass, we always like the trees and lift line under the Elk Camp chair. Had one day of fresh snow and we did the Cirque Headwall with 6 untracked inches - fantastic. Headwall, at top of Hanging Valley Wall was rocky at the top, but the rest of the trip down, through the trees, was a riot!

On mountain food is great at the Sun Deck at the top of Ajax. I had a chicken stir fry for lunch that was terrific. At Snowmass, the beef brisket sandwich at Sam's Smokehouse was big and very good. Our best dinner was at Asie, an Asian restaurant on Main Street. I had the best Sea Bass I've ever had there, and the other guys were quite please with the sushi. A burger at Bentleys was fine.

Great experience

We traveled to Aspen with our 18 months son. We had a lovely experience and enjoyed our vacation. This was our first time skiing in Colorado, so cannot compare to other resorts in US, but as a European used to ski in the Alps, I can compare to the French Alps. The resort is smaller than the big european resorts like 3 Valleys, but scenery is awesome, there are no crowds (at least in the first week of January), and the snow is fantastic. The town of Aspen is very charming, and the people are very nice and laid back. Aspen has lots of activities for the family (we could even rent a stroller for our son and spare us the pain of traveling with our stroller...)

Aspen/Snowmass 2009 CCSS Ski Trip

Connecticut Ski club of 26 adults staying at the Crestwood Condo (True ski-in/ski-out) at Snowmass; 7 day, 5 ski days with 4 mountain pass. The condo was very nice and the people were very helpful; pool, 3 hot tubs, steam room, exercise equipment, free laundry in each building. Transportation around Snowmass village, Aspen, and 4 mountains was free and convenient. Snowmass had a lot of good intermediate trails even with the lack of snow. The expert terrain was good at the top, but ice lower down (similar to East coast conditions). Highlands and Aspen Mountain more advanced terrain, but similar snow conditions. Worth the walk (30 minutes) to get to only bowl (Highlands); 40+ degree steeps with some nice trees in knee high wind pack powder. Snowed only once the first week of March, but got 15 inches the morning we left….

I loved Aspen

I had an amazing time in Aspen, despite being there after a month of record low snow fall. There is such a great variety of terrain on Aspen Mountain, but when you add Aspen Highlands and Snowmass, it's truly incredible. The ski instructors are great, as well as all of the mountain personnel. There are lots of great restaurants and shops to keep busy with in the evening.

Simply the best!

With 4 great mountains on an interchangeable ticket, a vibrant town with great restaurants and nightlife, and a free bus system that links it all together, Aspen is the finest place to ski in North America (possibly the world, but I haven't skied the whole world). The snow quality is always great too. Plenty of other non-skiing recreation as well - guided fly fishing trips, cross country ski trails, snowshoe trails, and dog sledding to name a few.
