Skiing Mammoth

Skiers and boarders in search of fresh powder are sure to find it at Mammoth. The resort boats the highest elevation—11,053 feet—for skiing and snowboarding in California, and receives, as aforementioned, a whopping 400-plus inches of snow annually. With 3,500 acres of terrain, a 3,100-foot vertical descent and nearly 40 percent designated as intermediate, you can bet that intermediate skiers and boarders will find their own slice of heaven. Beginners will find a perfect little paradise in the Main Lodge area, specifically on the Discovery Chair. Experts and extreme skiers will truly think they’ve died and gone to heaven. When standing atop the Top of the Sierra lift experts have the entire top half of the mountain to themselves via the resort’s high alpine ridgeline. From there, daring skiers have a seemingly endless amount of options, including many chutes, couloirs, bowls and even some cliffs.

Mammoth Mountain - A Village to match the Mountain!

Mammoth

My wife & I enjoyed our stay @ Mammoth very much. The terrain and snow conditions were great We arrived just after a seven foot storm cycle. My wife snowshoes & she loved the trails at Tamarack. The only thing lacking were full service on mountain restaurants.

Family ski trip - not easy but worth it!

Mammoth is great for all skill levels, had a private lesson for the youngest and the elders got some tips, too! The lodges were overcrowded and often there was standing room only, which was frustrating for the $$ spent. The staff was friendly and we had fabulous conditions. On the mountain photography was neat but $60 for one digital photo? Get real. The village is very crowded, 2 plus hour waits for restaurants, so we grab a condo with a kitchen as we had 4 kids with us. Overall an awesome trip, with a few hiccups- as anyone with children will tell you is normal!

Watchout for snowboarders with attitude

Mammoth would be a great mountain had it not been for all the snowboarders from LA with their surfer dude mentality. The number of times that I have been clipped by idiotic snowboarders at Mammoth is too numerous to count. They don't even apologize. The place is always crowded and the snowboarders create this barrier at top of every lift as they try to put on their snowboards. On the plus side Mammoth is one of the best connected mountains in the world and the snow is always good. If you can deal with idiotic snowboarder or if you are an idiotic snowboarder (not that all snowboarders are idiots but rather a lot of the snowboarders in Mammoth are) then Mammoth is the place for you. I have not been there during the week but I have heard the crowds aren't as bad as the weekends so you may want to give a try then because it is a great mountain if you can manage avoiding snowboarders.

As a Southern California resident, I have skied Mammoth since the early 80's. While it was always one of my favorite mountains, the "town" was lacking back then. Not anymore! With the addition of the Village at Mammoth and The Westin Monache Resort, the remodel of the Sierra Nevada Resort, the updates at the iconic Mammoth Mountain Inn and the many new shops and restaurants, the town of Mammoth now matches the mountain resort. With nonstop flights from four California airports (LAX, San Francisco, San Diego and Orange County) and possibly more to come right into Mammoth-Yosemite Airport, it's easy to reach from anywhere in the US. Once there, it's just a short 15 minute ride to a wide variety of lodging, shopping and dining. If you haven't been to Mammoth in years, it's time to go back. And if you have never been to Mammoth, do yourself a favor and visit this season!
